Why are Americans obese?

I came across this graphic courtesy of MindBodyGreen. It’s pretty self-explanatory and is a great eye-opener for those who may not realize the huge portions that our country has grown to have… and see as regular portions.

Sigh. America.

Take a look, how do YOU think we can take cues from other nations and go back to our former, regularly-sized meals?

  1. Chelsea says:

Europe and other countries outside North America lack the sheer volume of export/import relationships that we have in the United States. Having said that, just because we have it doesn’t mean we have to consume all of it. People fail to realize the psychological impact of things as simple as plate size, bowl size, or bag size. For instance: If you want some nuts, don’t take the whole bag of 20 servings with you. Pour out one serving. Likewise, don’t serve your dinner on plates with a 12-inch diameter. In terms of preparation, read directions carefully and make only what you need/should have, not the whole quantity. Just my two cents. Thanks for posting this!

    • Exactly! I truly believe that nutrition and even reading nutritional labels correctly should be taught to children in grade school… It is shocking how many adults I have met who still do not understand what a serving size consists of, and what the labels and ingredients relay. I will never forget one woman in my first college nutrition class who had always thought the facts on the side of a package were for the WHOLE package. Couldn’t believe it!
